Tolerance and Acceptance?

I may be paranoid, but it seems to me that intolerance is acceptable today if the object of your scorn and derision is the Catholic Church. Father Z delves into this in regards to the inclusion of Harry Knox on Obama's Faith-Based Council.

My good friend Ruben used to joke that the only things that are truly unacceptable in today's society are smoking and following the teachings of the Catholic Church. Everything else is tolerated, but if you light up or mention Humanae Vitae, prepare to get an earful.

I think Fr. Z's comment at the end of his blog post sum up what I'm getting at:
Imagine a person saying those sorts of things about Jews or Muslims.

Then try to imagine a President, of either party, appointing such a person to any position in the administration.
